Android and Google TV
IPTV on an Android TV box
A smart TV box is a small player that plugs into your TV and adds apps. Android and Google TV boxes are the most flexible of the lot, with real Ethernet ports and enough memory for large programme guides.
What you need
- An Android TV or Google TV box, or a TV with Google TV built in
- A wired connection if you can manage it, otherwise 5GHz WiFi
- A Google account for the Play Store
- The trial login we send on WhatsApp
Setup, step by step
- 01
Connect and update
Plug the box into HDMI and, if you can, a network cable. Join WiFi if there is no cable, then let the system update.
- 02
Sign in to Google
Use a Google account so you can use the Play Store. A phone with the Google Home app speeds this up.
- 03
Open the Play Store
Search for an IPTV player such as TiviMate or IPTV Smarters Pro. Check the update date and recent reviews before installing.
- 04
Install and open the player
Accept the permissions it asks for. It only needs network access to work.
- 05
Choose your login type
Pick Xtream Codes if your player offers it, because it loads the TV guide and library neatly. Otherwise pick M3U link.
- 06
Enter the details we send
Type or paste the server address, username and password. Save, then wait for the channel list to load.
- 07
Set the guide and favourites
Set the guide time offset to UK time if programmes look an hour out, then mark your favourite channels.
- 08
Stop the player sleeping
In Settings, Apps, switch off battery saving or app sleep for the player so the box does not close it.
Tips that save time
- Boxes with 2GB of memory or more cope better with large lists than the cheapest 1GB ones.
- Turn off any battery or app sleep setting for the player, or the box may close it in the background.
- A wired connection is the single biggest upgrade you can make for 4K.
