Kodi is a free, open source media player. It organises your own films, music and photos, plays them on a television, and can run add ons that bring in extra services. It is legal, widely used and well regarded. Installing it on a Firestick takes about ten minutes, because Kodi is not in every version of the Amazon Appstore and usually needs an outside install.

This guide covers the steps, then the part that most online tutorials leave out: what to watch out for once Kodi is running.

What Kodi is and is not

Kodi is a player and a library manager. On its own it contains no television channels, films or series. What it plays comes from files on your network, a drive plugged into the stick, or add ons you choose to install.

That last part is where trouble starts. Some add ons are legitimate, such as those for official broadcaster services, music libraries or your own media server. Others are built to stream pirated content, and installing or using those can break the law and expose you to malware. We do not recommend them and will not link to them.

Before you start

Check that your Firestick runs Fire OS. A few newer Fire TV models use Amazon's own Vega operating system, which does not run Android apps from outside the store, so Kodi will not install on those. Check the model's specifications before buying if Kodi matters to you.

You will also need your Firestick connected to WiFi and a free account for the Appstore.

Step by step

  1. Install Downloader. From the Firestick home screen, open Find, then Search, and type Downloader. Install the app with the orange icon.
  2. Allow installs from Downloader. Open Settings, then My Fire TV, then Developer Options, and switch on Install Unknown Apps for Downloader only. Leave other apps switched off.
  3. Get the official download link. Visit the Kodi website on a phone or computer and copy the address of the Android download page, which is kodi.tv/download. Only use the official site.
  4. Open Downloader and enter the address. Type the official link into the URL box and wait for the file to download.
  5. Install. Press Install when prompted. Choose Done once it finishes, then delete the installer file to save space.
  6. Open Kodi. Find it in Your Apps and Channels. The first launch takes a moment.

Setting Kodi up sensibly

  • Choose a skin you like. The default one is fine, but the settings let you change it.
  • Add your own media. If you have a computer or network drive with films, point Kodi at it under Videos, then Files.
  • Install add ons from the official repository only. Inside Kodi, the add on browser lists those that have been checked.
  • Keep it updated. New versions fix bugs and security issues.

Keeping the stick safe

Do not install add ons from unknown repositories. That is how malware reaches a Firestick.

Do not sign in with important passwords inside unfamiliar add ons. Treat them with the same caution as any website.

Remove the developer access once you are done. Turn off Install Unknown Apps for Downloader after Kodi is on.

Understand the law. Streaming content you are not licensed to watch is unlawful in the UK and can attract action from rights holders. If a service seems too good to be true, it usually is.

Kodi and IPTV

People often ask whether Kodi can play an IPTV service. It can, through a PVR client add on that accepts a playlist link, but a dedicated IPTV player app is simpler for most households. Our guide to IPTV player apps compares the options, and the Firestick setup guide shows how a standard install goes.

If you want to test a service on your own stick before committing, you can request a free trial and we send steps for your exact model.

Backups and updates

Once Kodi is set up the way you like it, make a backup. A backup add on can save your settings and library so a new stick or a reset does not mean starting again. Updates arrive through the app and the official website. Always take them from the official source, never from a link in a video description or a forum post.

Common problems

Kodi will not install. Check you downloaded the right build for your stick. The ARM version is the one most Firesticks use.

It runs slowly. Clear the cache in the settings, remove add ons you do not use, and restart the stick.

There is no sound. Check the audio settings inside Kodi and the Firestick's own sound menu. Passthrough settings often cause this.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Kodi itself is legal software. The legality depends on what you play with it. Content you are not licensed to watch is unlawful.

Is Kodi on the Amazon Appstore?

Availability varies by model and time. Most guides use Downloader because it works across Fire OS devices.

Do I need a VPN for Kodi?

Not to run it. Privacy tools are a personal choice. Our guide on VPNs for Firestick covers the pros and cons.
